Washington DWI Laws

Washington’s DOL reminds drivers that driving drunk can increase their chances of getting involved in an accident that can kill anyone. Because of the seriousness of this crime, penalties for DUI are stiff. For a BAC of 0.08% or higher, you will be arrested. Drivers under the age of 21 can get arrested for any alcohol in their system at all. Having a driver’s license implies that you agree to take a BAC test. Refusal will result in disqualification of your driver’s license and driving privileges for a year.

The penalties below are given in the case of injury or death during driving:

• License suspension
• One year license suspension for refusal of test
• For second arrest, license will be suspended for 2 years or until age of 21
• Proof of insurance
• Reapplication of license
• Fines
• Arrest on your driving record
• Your vehicle will be taken from you

The first DUI arrest costs a fine of $5000, jail time and other penalties. Frequent offenders can be given other penalties as well. Open alcohol containers are not allowed in moving vehicles; this includes passengers.
